In November we celebrated our 2-year anniversary operating in San Juan. In this time, our team performed 2427 prenatal visits, attended 183 births, and referred 75 women with risks. Please see our full statistics in the infographic below.

We celebrated our anniversary with an event hosted at our Casa attended by over 100 people including community leaders, partners, comadronas, and families of the staff. The team was overjoyed to share our success and put amazing effort into the preparation and decorations for the event.

We heard words of support from the mayor and the director of the Centro de Salud as well as from our director, Erica McElroy, and clinic director, Lesbia Cholotio. Former patients told stories of their experience at Casa Materna. One patient described how Lesbia never stopped encouraging her during labor and made her feel strong enough to endure the pain and meet her baby. A delicious lunch of Chicken Pepian, a traditional dish for celebrations, followed the event.

This Thanksgiving we are thankful for your support of the Casa Materna and hope to continue working to improve maternal and newborn health in Lake Atitlan!
