Our Mission

Casa Materna Atitlán seeks to lower maternal and infant mortality in impoverished areas of Guatemala experiencing some of the highest maternal mortality rates in the Western Hemisphere. A woman here is 63 times more likely to die in childbirth than a woman in the United States and most of the causes are preventable.

Fundraising Goals

This season we have set a goal of raising $25,000 towards providing safe births for the women of the rural communities we serve.

Ongoing needs supported by your donation:

$5,000 ~ Monthly operating expenses for Casa Materna

$500 ~ Monthly full-time birth attendant salary

$50 ~ Monthly pay for part-time community outreach staff

$15 ~ Ambulance driver for one transport

October Outreach Trip Update

INTERCONEXIÓN ATITLÁN – This event, hosted at Casa Materna in San Juan, gathered 30 participants from 10 like-minded organizations around Lake Atitlán to network and build relationships. Participants engaged in small group discussions responding to prompts from our team. Then, each group presented to the larger audience about key issues facing maternal and child health in the region. We hope to make this an annual event that will grow to include more stakeholders each year.

*A critical outcome is that the groups intend to work together to meet with officials in this region and present some of the obstacles and proposed solutions for the community.

TRAINING & OUTREACH – We also conducted a training and outreach event in the remote village of Camotán for comadronas, or midwives, and other community leaders. Birth attendants from Casa Materna and Saving Mothers instructed them about using birthing kits and postpartum care then afterwards provided the comadronas with birthing kits, prenatal vitamins and medicinal plants useful in pregnancy.

These events were met with great enthusiasm from the attendees who are optimistic about their ability to enact change in the community. Their hope, and ours, is to continue to make a difference. We are so grateful for your support!
