The Casa Connect: Fall 2019 Edition

The Casa Connect: Fall 2019 Edition

Welcome to the first edition of the Casa Materna Atitlán Newsletter.  Our hope is to keep you informed about current happenings with the Casa project in Guatemala.
Thank you for your support!

Upcoming Mission Projects

The Casa will host two integral conferences next month in Guatemala:

  • The first aims to gather like-minded organizations from around Lake Atitlán to network and build relationships among these organizations so that when there are future opportunities for collaboration, there can be a warm hand-off from one group to another.  All our services can be optimized if we work together to serve this community.
  • The second will be held in the more remote village of Camotán.  Along with Saving Mothers, our partner organization, we have identified a great need for the Casa services there. During this conference we will engage prominent community leaders and comadronas, or midwives, to develop partnerships.

Recent News from the Casa
  • This summer, 19 babies were born at the Casa Materna and our staff attended 248 prenatal appointments and 48 post-partum home visits.
  • The Casa birth attendants continue to identify high-risk patients and refer them to the hospital for care. There have been nine moms referred this summer, representing potential lives saved.
  • Erica Miller, a Labor & Delivery nurse from the U.S., just spent one month in San Juan providing continuing education to the Casa staff.
  • Jaclyn Karasik joined our on-site team as the Operations Manager and liaison to the U.S. volunteers.
  • Erika Close spent time with the Casa team teaching the annual “Helping Babies Breathe” neonatal resuscitation course.
Praise God for these blessings!
